About the class

Duration: 50 minutes

Objectives

Outline timetable and approach to class.
Discuss feedback from previous years.
Make students aware of learning resources available to them.
Make students aware of assessment criteria.
Make students aware of the coding aspect of the course (both in assessment and in content).
Introduce games.

Activity (20 minutes)

Goal. Open with a memorable game that exposes escalation and sunk cost, and set the rhythm of activity-then-discussion for the course.

Play the dollar auction game (with £5).

Top two bidders pay, winner gets to keep the £5.

Talk about strategy (briefly!), detail that we will do things like this every class: first 20 minutes will be an activity and the second will be a discussion of theory. Sometimes we will not finish the discussion.

A note on bribentives. Several later activities reward players with a bribentive. The word is a blend of bribe and incentive: the reward is usually just a sweet or a chocolate bar, so it is not really a good incentive, more a small bribe for engagement.
